Fuel Your Hormones:

Strategic Foods to Naturally Support Testosterone

Dwane Allen, PhD

Healthy Food Spread

Testosterone is a key hormone influencing energy, muscle mass, mood, and metabolic health. While medical therapies (e.g., TRT) are sometimes indicated, nutrition remains a foundational, modifiable factor that can support endogenous testosterone production.

Healthy Fats (Avocado, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Salmon)

Testosterone synthesis depends on cholesterol and lipid availability. Diets containing monounsaturated and saturated fats—such as those from avocados, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and fatty fish like wild-caught salmon—support steroidogenesis. Omega-3 fatty acids (from salmon) also reduce systemic inflammation, which can otherwise suppress testosterone.

Zinc-Rich and Protein-Dense Foods (Ground Beef, Pumpkin
Seeds, Poultry)

Zinc is critical for testosterone production and regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Foods like slow-cooked ground beef and pumpkin seeds provide bioavailable zinc. Adequate protein intake (e.g., pasture-raised poultry) further supports lean muscle mass, which is positively associated with testosterone levels.

Gut and Metabolic Support (Bone Broth, Green Bananas)

Chicken bone broth contains amino acids such as glycine and proline that support gut integrity. Emerging evidence suggests gut health influences hormone regulation via inflammation and nutrient absorption. Green (unripe) bananas are high in resistant starch, which improves insulin sensitivity—important because insulin resistance is linked to
lower testosterone.

Clinical Perspective

From a functional and metabolic standpoint, testosterone optimization requires a systems-based approach: nutrition, sleep, resistance training, and metabolic health must align. These foods do not “boost” testosterone acutely; rather, they create the physiological conditions necessary for optimal hormone production.
