What Are Wellness Visits and Physicals?

At BHFS Medical, we provide wellness visits and physicals so you can maintain your overall health and wellness. These visits could include biometric health screenings, blood work, and more so we can customize your visit to meet your needs. If necessary, we will use this information to create a personalized treatment plan to help you maintain your health for years to come. What Can I Expect During My Wellness Consultation?

In one of our comfortable treatment rooms at BHFS Medical, one of our skilled physicians will meet with you for your wellness visit or physical. You may be visiting for your own peace of mind or to meet the required needs of your insurance. During this visit, we will assess your height, weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood cholesterol, and more during a biometric health screening.

Based on your blood work and what we determine during your physical, we can help you determine a course of action on how to maintain your overall health. Follow-up visits can also be scheduled on an as-needed basis.

How often should you have a physical checkup?

It is typically recommended that patients have a wellness exam or physical at least once a year. This helps to ensure any potential health issues are diagnosed and treated early while helping our physicians assess your overall health and to set wellness goals. Physical exams are also often necessary to be eligible for team and competitive sports.

What tests are included in a physical examination?

The typical tests and biometric data measured during a physical exam includes:

Blood pressure
Heart rate
Lung function
Temperature, height, weight
Vision and hearing
Basic physical examination
Blood tests (liver function, cholesterol, etc.)
Urine tests
A general conversation about your current health, any symptoms, and concerns
How long does a physical exam usually take?

A typical physical exam for health and wellness usually takes about 30 - 45 minutes. If certain testing needs to be done that includes taking a physical sample (blood draw, urine sample, etc.), it may take more time.

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. The body breaks down food into sugar and then releases it into your bloodstream. What is a Nutritional Assessment?

Nutritional assessment is the systematic process of collecting and interpreting information in order to make decisions about the nature and cause of nutrition related health issues that affect an individual.

What to Expect at your Assessment?

The appointment begins by taking a detailed medical history to get all the information about your current issue and any symptoms you are experiencing. They will also ask you about your weight and height if appropriate. From here, they will do a nutritional daily schedule for the patient to follow and simply watch the results desired present itself.

Functional Rehabilitation

Functional rehabilitation is an important step in healing an injury so your body can function properly and you can avoid further damage in the future.

Why is Rehabilitation Important?

Rehabilitation is the process of regaining full function after an injury. The process involves restoring a patient's strength, flexibility, endurance, and more. Typically, this is achieved through a custom rehabilitation plan that involves a number of exercises and drills. While it's sometimes overlooked by some people, rehabilitation is vital following an injury. At BHFS Medical, clinical director Dr. Dwane Allen and his team offer functional rehabilitation to men, women, and children. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact our office!

What Can I Expect from Functional Rehab?

As soon as it's safe, you should begin rehabilitation exercises. At BHFS Medical, we suggest starting rehab after the initial inflammatory phase, which lasts about 72 hours. Most exercises should be done without causing pain; however, there are a few exceptions. Dr. Allen doesn't suggest the phrase "no pain, no gain," as this is often not true as pain is the body's way of telling you to stop or slow down. If ignored, you could do further damage.

There are generally three phases of rehab, which include:

Phase 1: The first phase of rehabilitation involves beginning gentle exercises that promote healing to the damaged area. This is not a phase that should be rushed as it can cause re-injury.
Phase 2: The second phase of rehab involves slowly loading the injured area to develop tensile strength, which will produce healed tissue that can withstand daily strains and stresses.
Phase 3: The final stage of rehabilitation is where the injured area adapts and is stressed out during functional exercises that will ensure the damaged area is ready to get back to normal everyday activities.

Should I Get Tested?

At various points in our lives, it is almost inevitable that a doctor will order tests of some kind. This action does not mean anything is severely wrong with you, rather, testing can be a fantastic way to establish a baseline of health when you are perfectly healthy. If you have any concerns beyond acute, observable symptoms, or if you know it is a point in your life worth establishing a baseline for any health factors, such as blood work, imaging, or ultrasounds, you may be an ideal candidate for receiving lab work.
