IOP and Addiction Program

What is IOP and Addiction Treatment?

Individuals who have found themselves in a cycle of drug dependency may struggle to break free on their own. At BHFS Medical, we offer an IOP (intensive outpatient program) and addiction program to support you along the way. This IOP program allows you to receive substance abuse treatment while also maintaining your everyday activities, such as work and school. How does IOP Addiction Treatment work?

When you visit BHFS Medical for your treatment, you can expect that our team is here to help you create a healthy life. Before we begin your treatment, we'll sit down and discuss your health, past history, drug use, and more so we can get an idea of who you are and what you'll need from us. As an intensive outpatient program, you can attend sessions in the day or evening, depending on your schedule, and you'll always have access to our team of physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, and other support staff to help you along the way.

During your treatment, you can expect:

Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions with an educated therapist will give you the safe space you need to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that play a role in your substance abuse.
Group therapy: Group therapy is so important when fighting substance abuse, as it helps you develop a support system of people going through the same thing as you who can encourage you along the way, and you for them.
Family therapy: Many families and/or couples gain a lot from family/couple therapy as it helps them improve their communication as a unit.
Case management: You will be assigned a case manager that will coordinate your care while you are in our program.

Neurotherapy and Biofeedback

A non-invasive treatment that uses real-time brainwave feedback to help individuals improve focus, emotional regulation, and cognitive function. It is often used for conditions like ADHD and autism, promoting self-regulation and reducing symptoms over time.

What is Neurotherapy and Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a form of neurotherapy that is used to help patients train their brains. Our bodies have a number of involuntary functions, such as lifting our hand to wave to someone, lifting our knee when walking upstairs, or our heart racing when we get nervous. Biofeedback can be used to help patients control these involuntary actions. With biofeedback therapy, a person can learn how to prevent or treat certain involuntary actions. The idea is that with this therapy, a person can learn how to understand what's going on inside their body so they can gain more control of it.

Common conditions treated with biofeedback include:

What Can I Expect from Biofeedback Therapy?

During your first biofeedback session at BHFS Medical, we will begin by getting to know you and your needs. From there, we can create a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. We will attach electrodes to your skin, which will send signals to our monitor. The monitor will display sounds, flashes of light, or an image that will represent your heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, temperature, sweating, muscle activity, and more. When you're experiencing stress, these will change (heart rate will speed up, muscles tighten, etc.) and will be indicated on the screen. The idea is this feedback will give you the knowledge you need to try to stop these involuntary behaviors.

Our biofeedback therapist will help you practice different relaxation exercises that will also help you control these functions. Some of these exercises include:

Deep breathing
Meditation
Guided imagery
Alternating tightening and relaxing muscle groups

ADHD & Autism Services

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood which usually presents itself by the age of 4. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disability caused by differences in the brain.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, also called attention-deficit disorder, is a neurobehavioral disorder, usually diagnosed in childhood. Some of the key characteristics include inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These symptoms usually occur together; however, one may occur without the other(s).

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood which usually presents itself by the age of 4. Individuals with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the results will be), or be overly active.

Common ADHD Symptoms

Disorganization and problems prioritizing.
Poor time management skills.
Problems focusing on a task.
Trouble multitasking.

Many children and some adults struggle with managing these symptoms which lowers their self-esteem and may lead to depression.

Excessive activity or restlessness.

What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects social interaction, communication, and behavior.

People with autism may experience sensory sensitivities, have specific interests, and prefer routines. However, they often excel in attention to detail, deep focus, and unique problem-solving abilities.

How do I get Psychiatric Medication?

Psychiatric medications are prescribed after one or more meetings with one of our psychiatrists. Typically, before prescribing any medication, we will meet with you to get to know you and your struggles, your goals, and your health and medication history. Before we prescribe any medication, we will come up with a treatment plan, which usually includes therapy to help you get the best outcome possible. After a prescription medication is provided, we will give your body time to adjust to the medication and evaluate if the medication is working in the way it should. Sometimes a lower or higher dose may be necessary, and other times, a different medication may need to be prescribed due to bad side effects or something else. Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback therapy teaches the brain the difference between positive and negative brainwaves so patients can better control thoughts and more.

What is Neurofeedback Therapy?

At BHFS Medical, we offer neurofeedback therapy as a solution to help our patients train specific areas of the brain to bring it back to full function. Oftentimes, this therapy is utilized for patients with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, and more. It is also commonly used to help athletes increase their focus so they can decrease distractions and perform better during games. Neurofeedback therapy is used to teach patients how to take control of their brain functions. It is a reward-based training that essentially teaches the brain how to identify negative brainwave patterns and replace them with positive patterns, which will help a person break free of the cycle that leads to negative emotions or unhealthy responses. Our highly trained therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists are skilled in neurofeedback therapy and look forward to helping you today.

How does Neurofeedback Therapy Work?

During your customized neurofeedback therapy session, we'll have you relax in one of our comfortable treatment rooms.

We will connect electrode sensors to your head that will read electrical signals produced by your brain and record them onto the computer.
From there, one of our team members will have you engage in an activity, like looking at pictures, listening to music, or even playing a videogame.
While you do this, we will monitor your brainwaves and create a training technique.
During the neurofeedback session, you will actually be able to see your brainwave patterns and learn how to identify negative brainwave patterns.
From there, your brain will learn what it needs to do to create positive brainwave patterns.

With continued practice, your brain will get better and better at this, allowing you to have more control of your thoughts. These sessions at our office typically take between 45 – 60 minutes, and we often suggest about 30 – 40 sessions for optimal success.
