What is a Pain Assessment?

A pain assessment is how doctors or nurses check and understand a person’s pain. Since only the patient can describe what they feel, they ask questions and sometimes use scales or charts.

How bad the pain is (often on a scale from 0–10).

What the pain feels like (sharp, dull, burning, throbbing, etc.).
When it started and how long it lasts.
What makes it better or worse.
How it affects daily life (sleep, walking, mood, etc.).

The appointment begins by taking a detailed medical history to get all the information about your current issue and any symptoms you are experiencing. They will also ask you about your weight and height if appropriate. From here, it is an important step in creating an effective treatment plan because pain may be subjective—only the patient can truly describe what they are experiencing.
